Tax credit for green investments
When am I entitled for the tax credit for green investments?
This rebate reduces the income tax and national social insurance contributions you have to pay. When you invest your money in green investments, you are entitled to this tax credit. When the value of your green investments is higher than the tax exemption, you have to declare the difference in the annual income tax return. Are you curious whether your investments are ‘green’ or not? Then read on. On this page, we will discuss the rebate.
Green investments
When you invest in green investments, the money is invested in a so-called Green Fund. This money is used to finance green projects. Green projects are committed to protecting the environment. So, you get tax benefit while investing in such green investment. We call this a win-win situation!
Where can I invest in green investments?
Investing in a Green Fund yields a lower return, however, you do get a tax benefit. Because your return on these investments is lower, the green projects are able to lend money at a lower rate as well. We list several banks and institution which are acknowledged as a Green Fund by the government:
- ABN AMRO Groenbank B.V.
- ASN Groenprojectenfonds
- BNP Paribas Groen Fonds
- Groenwoningen Fonds
- ING Groenbank N.V.
- Nationaal Groenfonds
- Rabo Groen Bank B.V.
- Regionaal Duurzaam 1
- Stichting NOTS RE Investments
- Triodos Groenfonds N.V.
- Ecowoningen Fonds
Tax exemption in box 3
The tax credit for green investments is calculated using the maximum exemption that you use when determining your taxable income in box 3 (savings and investments). The tax credit is 0.7% of your exemption in box 3. The Belastingdienst automatically calculates this when determining your assessment.
If you have green investments, the tax exemption in 2021 amounts to €60,429 if you do not have a fiscal partner and if you do have a fiscal partner the tax exemption amounts to €120,858. When the value of the investments is higher, you have to pay tax on the difference between the amount of the exemption and the value of your green investments.
