Study costs no longer deductible in 2022

In the Netherlands, you may sometimes deduct the study expenses you make. But there are some conditions attached to this. First, you may not be entitled to a study grant. In addition, the course has to be sufficient for your current or future job, and it has to be a learning path (‘leertraject’). However, from January 1st, 2022, your study costs will no longer be deductible.

Tip: pay your study costs in 2021!

In 2021, the study costs you incur will still be deductible up to a maximum of € 15,000. So does your education meet all the requirements? Then, try to pay most of the study expenses in 2021. In this way, you make optimal use of the study cost deduction. You can find the amount you may deduct from your taxable income on this page. On that page, you can also find the costs that are (not) tax-deductible.

New alternative: STAP budget

The fact that the study costs deduction stops in 2021 makes studying a bit demotivating. Fortunately, the government has come up with an alternative: the STAP budget, which stands for Stimulation of the Labor Market Position (in Dutch: Stimulering Arbeidsmarktpositie). Within the STAP budget, people that work and job seekers can apply for a maximum of € 1,000 for development and schooling. The goal is to create more opportunities for people to keep their current job or find a new one. You can request this STAP budget once a year at the UWV.
