Expats in the Netherlands

Income Tax Return

Everybody in the Netherlands is obligated to pay tax. You have to pay tax on, for example, income from work, your own residence, savings and investments. We dedicated this section to the income tax return. Click here to go to Income Tax Return.

M-form

The first year you moved to the Netherlands, you are required to file a migration tax return form (the M-form). Most expats will receive a tax refund because they didn’t live in the Netherlands for the whole year and therefore paid too much income tax. The M-form is a big booklet (not available online) and is only in Dutch, which makes it difficult for people who don’t understand the Dutch language. We dedicated this section to the M-form. 30% ruling

The 30% ruling is a tax advantage for highly skilled migrants who moved to the Netherlands for a specific employment role. If you are eligible for the 30% ruling, you don’t have to pay tax over 30% of your gross salary in the Netherlands. As of 1 January 2019, the maximum duration of the 30% ruling is five years, instead of eight years. We dedicated this section to the 30% ruling. Click here to go to the 30% ruling.
