The tax return must be filed annually before May 1. In most years, you can do the tax return yourself, but in some years it is better to get some help with this. For example, the years you will sell or buy a house or when your mortgage will change. Besides, many people experience filing a tax return as a boring time-consuming job. The purchase/sale of a house or change of mortgage.
- Do you temporarily own two houses? Then you might be eligible for an interest deduction for both houses.
- Have you realized a surplus-value when selling your house? This affects the amount of the interest deduction.
- Have you incurred costs when purchasing your house? Various costs are deductible.
Tax partners have several tax advantages. Some items may be divided between both partners, for example, the capital, income and deductible items of your own home. The optimal distribution differs per situation.
Did you separate last year? If you had a tax partnership, this will end. Also, you might be selling/buying a house or pay/receive spousal alimony. This will affect your tax return.
You have to file the M-form the first year you moved to the Netherlands. This is a big paper book that is only available in Dutch and, therefore, needs to be filed in the old fashioned way: by pen. This can be very difficult and takes a lot of effort, especially for expats who don’t speak Dutch. It can be advisable to get help from a tax advisor to file a complete and correct tax return.
High study and/or health costs
Have you incurred a lot of study costs, health costs or other deductible costs that are not reimbursed? Then, it is wise to let a tax advisor find out which costs are deductible.
