Do you or does your partner need to go to a nursing home? Or maybe the both of you? Then you have to deal with several financial matters. Your contribution to the Long-term Care Act (Wlz) is one of them.
The long-term care act (in Dutch: Wet langdurige Zorg) regulates complex, intensive care for vulnerable elderly, people with disabilities and people with mental illness. Only if you need 24-hour supervision as a result of illness or a condition, you are qualified for the Long-term Care Act.
Everyone in the Netherlands is entitled to affordable health care. Poor or rich, young or old, healthy or sick: it does not matter. Because of this, everyone who works in the Netherlands pays insurance, also for the Long-term Care Act.
However, when you move into a nursing home, you have to contribute a certain amount yourself. This is called the contribution to the Long-term Care Act. There are two types of contributions: low and high. The low contribution applies to the first four months you are living there or when your partner is still living at home. When this is not the case, you have to apply for the high contribution.
The amount depends on the ‘contributory income’. This income exists of your box 1 income and a part of your box 3 income (4% capital income addition). To calculate your contribution, your contributory income from two years before the admission is used.

Do you or does your partner already reach the state pension age when leaving for a nursing home? Then you or your partner can choose whether you want to receive the AOW for singles or partners.
When both of you already reached the state pension age when moving to a nursing home, you can either choose to both receive the single person’s AOW or both receive the partner’s AOW. It is wise to check whether choosing the single person’s AOW is still beneficial since the personal contribution under the Long-Term Care Act can increase considerably.
