Take out a health insurance is compulsory in the Dutch Tax System. Healthcare allowance ensures that paying this remains affordable for everyone. Expats or students that are (temporarily) working in The Netherlands can also apply for this. But not everyone receives healthcare allowance, there are several conditions attached to this. Are you wondering if you are eligible for health care allowance? Then read on.

The amount depends on your annual income and family situation. The tax authorities have published a table with the monthly amounts to be received, click here. The monthly amount you receive is in advance. If you have earned less than the estimation of your annual income, you will receive a retroactive refund. The same applies the other way around.
You can apply for the allowance via the Tax and Customs Administration. Click here to calculate and apply for your health care allowance. It is based on the information that the Tax and Customs Administration has on you. Therefore, our advice is: if something changes, report this immediately. This prevents you from receiving too little surcharge or from having to repay it later. You can report these changes by logging in with your DigiD at “Mijn Toeslagen“.
