An AOV (arbeidsongeschiktheidsverzekering) pays you an income if illness or injury stops you working. As an employee you'd have two years of sick pay and then WIA. Self-employed, you have neither. WIA is the state scheme that pays employees after two years of illness. The premium is deductible in Box 1 if you are an income-tax entrepreneur. That means you run your own business, such as a sole proprietorship or a partnership. Own a limited company? Ask your advisor about the deduction. Box 1 is the Dutch tax category for income from work. Part of the cost comes back through your tax return. If you claim, the Belastingdienst (the Dutch tax authority) taxes your payout as income. You choose the waiting time, the benefit level and how long it pays. You compare the options together and get the right cover arranged.
