Relief when two countries tax you
Two countries can both have a claim on the same asset. The treaty between them decides which one gives way.

Live in the Netherlands and your worldwide assets belong in your Dutch return. Moved here or leaving soon? That changes which year counts. Pick the part of your situation below and we show you where it lands.
Worldwide assets
If you live in the Netherlands, your assets count wherever they sit. Savings, a flat abroad, investments and crypto held outside the Netherlands all belong in Box 3.
You declare property abroad here, with relief for the country that may also tax it. The treaty with that country decides who may tax what. We make sure the relief lands in your return.
The Belastingdienst already receives data on foreign accounts. Banks and brokers abroad pass account details on under international exchange agreements. Leaving something out is a risk, not a saving.
Arriving or leaving during the year changes what counts. Your arrival or departure date affects your return for that year. Tell us your dates and we work it out with you. The 30% ruling no longer keeps foreign Box 3 assets out of your Dutch return.
We cover the rates and thresholds on our Box 3 wealth tax page. Every other situation has its own page on the My situation hub.
What you own
Pick the asset that brought you here. A home you kept, an account you never closed, a portfolio abroad: each lands somewhere different.
We route you to the page that answers it. Having several is normal and one conversation covers them together.
In your return
Almost everything you own abroad meets your Dutch return in Box 3. Three questions decide what happens after that.

Rent or a pension payment from abroad is income, not wealth. That question has its own route.
At a certain point the question shifts from declaring to planning. We look at your full situation with you.
