Childcare allowance
The Belastingdienst pays part of your childcare bill through the childcare allowance, called kinderopvangtoeslag. What you get depends on your household income and your working hours.

Your family grows and your income moves. Your home starts to feel small. We show you what each change does to your money. Then we point you to the page that handles it. The amounts live on those pages, not here.
Family, income and home
Growing in the Netherlands moves three things at once: what you receive, what you pay and what you owe.
A child brings allowances and credits you did not qualify for before. A pay rise moves part of your income into a higher bracket. It can also trim credits you already had. A bigger home changes your mortgage, your deduction and the cover your household needs.
Below you pick your moment. We take you there.
Not the moment you are in? We also map out arriving in the Netherlands, settling in the Netherlands and thriving in the Netherlands.
Children
A child changes what you receive from the Belastingdienst (the Dutch Tax Administration), not only what you spend.
Some support arrives automatically. Other support you have to claim. A few schemes depend on the hours you both work.
Each page below tells you who qualifies, what the conditions are and how we file it with you. A new child also changes what your household should insure. You will find life cover further down. Your residence and work situation in the Netherlands decide which of these you can claim.
Income
A higher salary is not simply more money in your account.
Part of the rise lands in a higher bracket. Credits you had at your old salary start to taper. And if one of you stops working, the household picture changes again.
The pages below take each change on its own, so you can see which one is moving for you. On the 30 percent ruling, a rise or its end changes your picture again. We map the 30 percent ruling on arriving in the Netherlands.
More room
Moving up is a mortgage question and a tax question on the same day.
Your new loan is bigger than the one you have. The interest you may deduct changes with it. So does the cover your family needs on a larger commitment.
Buying your first Dutch home instead? We cover that moment on settling in the Netherlands.
Insuring the new place is part of the same conversation. See home insurance for what a bigger home actually needs.

Where to start
Six changes that bring people to us at this stage. Yours not here? Book your free call and we route you to the right page.
The Belastingdienst pays part of your childcare bill through the childcare allowance, called kinderopvangtoeslag. What you get depends on your household income and your working hours.
The child budget, called kindgebonden budget, is a monthly contribution towards raising your children. It comes on top of child benefit. We check whether it applies to you.
The combination tax credit is called inkomensafhankelijke combinatiekorting. It helps working parents with a young child at home. Which parent claims it depends on your incomes and your care hours.
The Belastingdienst taxes your income in bands. This page shows what the next band actually costs you.
The labour tax credit, called arbeidskorting, rises with your earnings and then falls again. We check where your new salary sits.
Tax partners can move deductions to whichever of you saves the most. We map that before you file.
If one partner has little or no income, part of a credit can sometimes still be paid out. We check whether your household qualifies.
Advice on the mortgage your next home needs. A&H Finance, our associated company, compares the whole market and explains what fits your income. Start with the mortgage, because it sets the ceiling on everything else.
Moving up often means increasing your loan or refinancing it. A full comparison of both routes, and what each one means monthly.
The year you buy, your return changes shape. Deductions and one-off costs all land in it.

“Most people arrive with a moment, not a product. It is a baby, a promotion or a house that got too small. My job is to say what that moment actually changes for you, before you sign anything.”
