How it protects

What life cover pays out, and when

Life insurance pays your loved ones a fixed amount if you die within the policy term. Dutch insurers call this cover an overlijdensrisicoverzekering or ORV for short. The cover can stay level or decrease with your mortgage. Decreasing cover is cheaper. Level cover protects your income. You work out the right amount together, including who receives the payout. The amount takes into account your survivor's pension and Anw payment, the Dutch state survivor benefit. For recent arrivals, we first check which of these benefits apply. You also bring in cover you already hold abroad. That protects your family instead of surprising them. The right setup can keep the payout out of your estate.

When life cover matters

Most people arrange life cover at one of these moments.

Buying

I'm buying a home

Your lender may ask for cover with the mortgage, fitted to the loan. See our [mortgage advice page](/en/mortgage/mortgage-advice) too.

Family

I have a young family

If your income stops, theirs shouldn't. Cover calculated to match what your family needs.

Partners

We're not married

The policy setup decides who receives what, and what the tax office takes. Worked through with you, and recorded. With crosswise cover, you pay the premium on your partner's life yourself. The payout then often stays outside Dutch inheritance tax.

Moving

I'm moving countries

Foreign policies don't always cover a Dutch life. What travels with you, checked for you.

Insurance advice is provided by our associated company A&H Finance, where Kim works. They advise you and arrange the insurance. Your agreement for this advice is with them and they are responsible for the service. TaxSavers introduces you and is not a party to that agreement. Do you have a complaint about the advice? Raise it with them first. If you cannot agree with them, you can take it to Kifid, the Dutch financial complaints body. They are registered there and have accepted binding advice, so a Kifid ruling binds them.

Life insurance questions, answered straight

Is life insurance mandatory in the Netherlands?
No law requires it, and an NHG mortgage no longer requires life cover since 2018. NHG is the Dutch national mortgage guarantee. Some lenders still ask for cover with the loan. You get your lender's requirements checked as part of your mortgage picture. This rule is in the NHG conditions, consulted in September 2026.
How much cover do I need?
Enough to cover your mortgage or your family's income gap. You calculate it together. Rules of thumb miss what matters: your loan, your partner's income and your plans. You also count in your survivor's pension and the Anw benefit. Anw is the Dutch state survivor benefit. If you recently arrived, we check which of these you qualify for. Your advisor also checks which insurers accept newcomers in your situation.
Should I choose level or decreasing cover?
Decreasing cover tracks your mortgage, level cover protects income. Decreasing is cheaper because the insured amount falls over time. You pick the shape that fits your goal together.
We're not married. Does that matter?
Yes: the policy setup decides who receives the payout and whether inheritance tax applies. Set up the right way, the payout can stay outside the estate. You arrange that together.
Do I need a medical exam?
Usually a health declaration is enough. A medical exam applies above certain insured amounts. You get help with the declaration so it's complete and correct.
What if I leave the Netherlands?
Whether your policy travels with you depends on the insurer and your destination. Some policies continue abroad, some don't. If yours does not, we tell you what to arrange before you move. A beneficiary living abroad can still receive the payout. We check the tax on that payout for you.
What does the advice cost?
The first call is free. Your advisor goes through what fits your situation in that call, before anything starts. You approve a proposal first. Only then does your advisor arrange the cover.
Are you authorised to give mortgage and insurance advice?
TaxSavers advises on tax, not on mortgages, insurance or pensions. For those we work with A&H Finance, a trade name of New Business Group B.V. They hold the AFM licence (12017511) and they advise and arrange. The AFM is the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets. We introduce you and take on the tax that follows.
