How do you file a Dutch tax return?
You file your Dutch tax return online through Mijn Belastingdienst, using your DigiD. Mijn Belastingdienst is the secure portal of the Belastingdienst, the Dutch tax authority. DigiD is your national login for government services.¹
A tax return is your yearly report of what you earned and what you owe or get back. Most of it is already prepared for you. Your job is to check it, add what is missing and send it.
This page is about the filing process itself. Which form applies to you? Our guide to the Dutch tax return forms walks through it. Did you move to or from the Netherlands in the year you are filing for? Then you file the migration-year return, covered on our M-form page. Would you rather we file it for you? See our Dutch tax return service.
Take Ravi. He moved to the Netherlands the year before and is now filing his first full year as a resident. He received a letter from the Belastingdienst asking him to file. We follow his return through this page. Ravi's return covers the previous calendar year, which he files this spring.
In short
Online with DigiD. You file through Mijn Belastingdienst.
Four steps. Prepare your documents, check the pre-filled data, complete it, then sign and send.
The window runs 1 March to 1 May. File before 1 April for a reply before 1 July.
Mostly pre-filled. Your wage, mortgage interest and bank balances are already entered for you.
You add the rest. Deductions like healthcare costs, gifts and extra pension are not filled in automatically.
A reply within about three months. After you file, the Belastingdienst sends a definitive assessment.
A letter means you must file. Expecting a refund or owing tax? You file even without a letter.
When can you file your tax return?
The filing window opens on 1 March and the deadline is before 1 May.¹ You can file from the day the window opens, once your annual statements are ready.
File before 1 April and the Belastingdienst replies before 1 July. That is useful if you expect money back and want it sooner. Need more time? You can ask for an extension, which usually runs to around 1 September.² We cover that on our tax return extension page.
Not everyone has to file. You file if the Belastingdienst sends you an invitation letter, the aangiftebrief. You also file if you owe tax or expect a refund, even without a letter. Ravi received the letter, so for him filing is required.
| What | When |
|---|---|
| Filing window opens | 1 March |
| Filing deadline | Before 1 May |
| File before this date for a reply before 1 July | 1 April |
| Extension on request | Around 1 September |

How do you file, step by step?
You file in four steps: prepare, check, complete, then sign and send. The Belastingdienst has already done most of the work, so the return is mainly a review.
First, gather your annual statements and your DigiD. Ravi collects his jaaropgaaf, the annual statement his employer sends. Then he logs in.
Second, open the pre-filled return in Mijn Belastingdienst and check it. The Belastingdienst calls this the vooringevulde aangifte, the return it fills in for you from data it already holds. Ravi sees his wage and his bank balances are already there.
Third, complete what is missing. The pre-filled return does not include your deductions, so you add those yourself. Ravi adds the healthcare costs he can deduct.
Fourth, sign and send. You submit the return and you save the receipt, the ontvangstbevestiging. Ravi sends his return and keeps the confirmation. The Belastingdienst then works out his definitive assessment, usually within three months. The three month reply term comes from the Belastingdienst, checked on 3 August 2026.
| Step | What you do | Good to know |

| 2. Check | Open the pre-filled return and read it through | Wage, mortgage and bank data are already there |
| 3. Complete | Add what is missing, such as deductions | Deductions are not filled in for you |
| 4. Sign and send | Submit and save the confirmation | You get a reply within about three months |
“People think the hard part is the form. It is not. Most of it is pre-filled. The value is in the parts that are not. The deductions you can claim, and the peace of mind that it is right.”
Should you file it yourself or hand it over?
File it yourself when your return is simple. Hand it over when it is not. A straightforward year with one employer and a pre-filled return is something many people do themselves.
Some years are less simple. Maybe you bought or sold a home, changed your mortgage or have income abroad. The 30% ruling adds lines too. Each is easy to get wrong. A mistake now can follow you for years.
This is where we come in. We file your return with you and claim every deduction that fits. We also check the parts that depend on your circumstances.
What does this mean for you?
The next step is your own situation.
Check the pre-filled return line by line and add the deductions it leaves out. Mind the 1 May deadline and file before 1 April for a faster reply. Did your year include a house, a move or anything abroad? Then have it checked before you file.
We make sure it is right before we file it. Ravi checked his return, added his deductions and sent it before 1 April.
