What's included

Gifts, sorted.

We tell you whether Dutch gift tax applies and file the return for you, on time. You see a draft and approve it before we file. No surprises afterwards. Usually the receiver files. We arrange that for you or the donor.

A gift is more than money. Think of money, a car, a house or shares. Anything of value you receive for nothing in return counts. The Dutch tax authority (the Belastingdienst) may expect a gift tax return.

Not every gift leads to tax. In 2026 a parent can give a child up to €6,908 tax-free. The annual exemption for anyone else is €2,769. There is also a one-off raised exemption: €33,129 free to spend for a child between 18 and 40, or €69,009 toward an expensive study. Above the exemption, gift tax runs from 10% (partner or child) to 40% (other receivers). Anyone using the raised one-off exemption must always file a return to claim it.

Why together works

A gift rarely stands alone.

A gift toward a house touches your mortgage. A gift on paper touches your estate. Our associated company, a separate licensed advice firm, advises on mortgage, insurance and pension. We handle the tax in the same conversation.

Frequently asked

Gift tax questions, answered straight.

The questions we hear most about filing a gift tax return. Yours not here? Ask your advisor

Do I pay tax on a gift from family abroad?
It depends on where the donor lives, not where you live. If a Dutch national gave the gift within 10 years of emigrating, Dutch gift tax can still apply. A non-Dutch donor only triggers it if they left the Netherlands under a year ago. We work out your case in the intro call. More detail: gift tax from abroad, explained.
What can I receive tax-free in 2026?
A parent can give a child €6,908 a year tax-free, and €2,769 applies for anyone else. Once in a lifetime a raised exemption applies: €33,129 free to spend (age 18–40), or €69,009 toward an expensive study. Above the exemption, gift tax applies. To claim the raised one-off exemption you do need to file.
When is the gift tax return due?
Before 1 March of the year after the gift. You file online via Mijn Belastingdienst or on paper. Missed it? File as soon as you can. Filing online needs a DigiD login, which you request once in the Netherlands. If you're late, the Belastingdienst can impose a fine.
Can I still get the old home-gift exemption (the "jubelton")?
No. Since 1 January 2024 the jubelton no longer exists. A gift toward a home now uses the one-off free-purpose exemption of €33,129 for a child between 18 and 40. Spending it on a house is allowed. There is no separate home exemption left to claim.
What is a gift on paper, and what do you need from me?
A gift on paper records a gift now as a debt you pay out later, often to lower future inheritance tax. It needs a notarial deed and at least 6% interest, actually paid to the receiver each year. Both of you also report it in the income tax return. To start we need three things: who gives to whom, the amount and the donor's country of residence. We handle the rest.
What if the donor dies soon after the gift?
A gift made in the 180 days before the donor dies is generally taxed with the estate rather than on its own. We check this for you, so you never file the same gift twice.
