Inheritance tax return

Your inheritance tax return, handled with care.

After a death, the Belastingdienst may ask for an inheritance tax return. This is the erfbelasting return.

We prepare and file it for you, calmly and on time. So you can focus on what matters. Heirs or assets abroad? We handle that too, in English or Dutch.

What we do

The inheritance tax return, prepared and filed.

We prepare and file your inheritance tax return, the erfbelasting return. It sets out what each heir receives from the estate. It then works out any inheritance tax due. Not every estate pays tax. In 2026 a partner keeps €828,035 tax-free, a child €26,230. The rate depends on how closely you were related to the person who died.

We check whether a return is needed. Then we gather the values and prepare a draft. You approve it, then we file it with the Belastingdienst (the Dutch tax authority).

Want to see a worked example first? Our inheritance tax return checklist walks through it step by step. The 2026 exemption amounts above come from the Belastingdienst.

Gift tax and inheritance tax follow the same law. The overview is on our page about gift tax in the Netherlands.

“A death brings enough to arrange already. I take the return off your hands, explain each step and make sure we file it on time.”

Pricing

Your personal price, fixed up front.

You hear your personal price before anything starts, and it stays fixed.

How our pricing works

We agree your personal price in writing before any work starts. After that it stays fixed. It includes 21% VAT. It covers one inheritance tax return for the estate, however many heirs there are. A larger or cross-border estate can add complexity, and we tell you that up front, never afterwards.

Your two routes

Do it yourself. Or hand it over.

You can file the erfbelasting return yourself through Mijn Belastingdienst. With several heirs or a foreign element, an advisor makes the difference. Mijn Belastingdienst is the tax authority portal, and it needs a Dutch DigiD login.

The same estate

One estate, more than one return.

A death often brings more than the inheritance tax return. The person who died still has a final income tax return for their last year. A surviving partner's return can change too. We handle these together, with one point of contact. So nothing slips through the cracks. We confirm up front which of these returns your price covers.

Was it a gift during someone's lifetime rather than an inheritance? That follows different rules, and we file the gift tax return too.

Part of the estate may sit abroad. Some heirs may live outside the Netherlands. We check which assets belong in the Dutch return and which do not. We check whether a treaty prevents double tax on the same assets. Then you get a single return that covers everything.

Frequently asked

Inheritance tax return questions, answered.

The questions we hear most from heirs and executors. Yours not here? Ask your advisor

Do I even have to pay inheritance tax in the Netherlands?
Often less than people expect. Sometimes there is nothing to pay at all. In 2026 a partner can inherit up to €828,035 tax-free, and a child up to €26,230. Above the exemption, the Belastingdienst charges tax at a rate that depends on your relationship to the person who died. We work out whether you owe anything and how much. These are the 2026 figures published by the Belastingdienst. Dutch inheritance tax depends on where the person who died lived, not where the heirs live.
What is the deadline for the inheritance tax return?
It depends on when the death happened. For a death in 2026, the Belastingdienst gives you 20 months to file. For a death in 2025 or earlier, the term is 8 months from the date of death. Miss it and tax interest can start to run, so we keep an eye on your date.
Who has to file the inheritance tax return?
The executor named in the will files for all the heirs. No executor? Then the heirs can pick one person to file for everyone, which is usually the cleanest. Or each heir files their own return. We often file one return for the whole estate.
How do I file the inheritance tax return?
Online through Mijn Belastingdienst with your DigiD or on paper. With several heirs, that is easier said than done, especially with a foreign element in the estate. We prepare the whole return and handle the filing for you. Heirs living abroad often have no DigiD and we file for them. DigiD is the Dutch online login that residents use for government services.
What does it cost to have the inheritance tax return done?
From €895, depending on the estate. That covers one return for the whole estate, no matter how many heirs there are. Your personal price comes first and it stays fixed.
When does the Belastingdienst send the inheritance tax letter?
Usually within a few months of the death. The letter, the aangiftebrief, names the exact date your return is due. No letter yet? You may still need to file, so it is worth checking early, and we can check for you. The letter confirms the deadline that already runs from the date of death.
We are heirs living abroad, or the estate has foreign assets. Can you still help?
Yes, this is exactly where we add the most. Foreign heirs, foreign assets in the estate, or a cross-border wrinkle all change the picture. We sort out what belongs where and file one clear return, in English or Dutch.
