What's on your end of year tax checklist?
Two things. First, the documents your 2026 Dutch tax return needs. Second, a short list of year-end actions. Most of them work only if you act before 31 December 2026. Three turn on 1 January instead. That date sets your Box 3 position, or your benefit eligibility for the year.
This page covers both in one place. The deadline table names each action and its date. It links to the TaxSavers guide that owns the exact figures. The documents table names the category and where you find it. A linked figure might be a mortgage rate, a pension-gap amount, or a Box 3 threshold. We don't repeat those numbers here, so you always land on the current figure, not a copy of it.
In short
Two halves: documents for your return, and deadline actions dated 31 December or 1 January.
BSN and DigiD are your two starting keys. You need both before you can file.
Foreign accounts count. Worldwide savings, investments and crypto belong in your Dutch return, not just Dutch ones.
Calendar-year timing decides several of these at once. Mortgage-interest prepayment, a pension-gap top-up and fiscal partnership all reset for a year if you miss 31 December.
Late filing can cost €469, after a reminder and a formal notice.
An extension moves your deadline to 1 September, if you ask before your own deadline.
Every figure lives on its own page. This checklist points you to the guide that owns the number.
Who this checklist is for.
This checklist is for internationals filing a Dutch tax return. Every item below applies to a specific situation, not to everyone at once. Here's how that plays out for one reader. Daniel moved to Amsterdam two years ago for a Dutch employer. He bought a small apartment with a mortgage, and still holds an old workplace pension pot in the UK. He has also lived with his Dutch partner for over a year. They met the fiscal-partnership condition in November. He needs some of the documents below, and three of the deadline actions. You'll likely recognise your own situation in a few of the items too, even if your mix looks different from his.
Which documents do you need to gather?
Ten categories cover almost every Dutch tax return. Daniel needs six of them this year. He needs his BSN, his DigiD and his employer's jaaropgave (annual income statement). He also needs his mortgage statement, his WOZ-waarde, and his Dutch bank overview. The table below covers all ten. It explains why the Belastingdienst wants each one, and where you actually find it. Working as a freelancer or business owner? Your business records apply on top. Our guide for freelancers and business owners covers those extra records.⁴
| Document | Why you need it | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| BSN (Burgerservicenummer) | Your personal tax number. Every field in your return links back to it. | Your Dutch residence permit, ID card, or municipal registration letter |
| DigiD login | The login for Mijn Belastingdienst. Without it, you cannot file online at all. | digid.nl, activated by a code sent to your home address |
| Jaaropgave (annual income statement) | The exact salary and withheld wage tax your return checks against, from every employer or benefits body you had. | Your employer's HR portal or payroll administrator, usually by the end of January |
| Dutch bank and investment jaaroverzicht (annual overview) | Sets your savings and investments for Box 3, the Dutch wealth tax. | Online banking, under "jaaroverzicht" or "fiscaal jaaroverzicht" |
BSN and DigiD are not the same thing.
Your BSN identifies you to the Belastingdienst. DigiD is the separate login that lets you act on that identity online. You need both to file.
What do you need to do around year-end?
A handful of actions, each tied to a date. Five of them fall on 31 December. Three turn on 1 January or around New Year. Miss your own date, and the opportunity resets for another twelve months. Three of these apply to Daniel: fiscal partnership, a pension-gap check, and mortgage-interest prepayment.
| Action | Deadline | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Mortgage-interest prepayment | 31 December | Paying part of next year's interest early can shift the deduction into this tax year. See our [mortgage-advice guide](/en/mortgage/mortgage-advice) to check whether it's worth it for your rate. |
| Fiscal-partnership condition | 31 December | The qualifying condition, often a notarial cohabitation agreement, must exist within the calendar year for that year to count. See our [tax-partner allocation guide](/en/clarity/tax-partner-allocation) for how the split then works. |
| Allowance capital limits | 1 January | Your assets on 1 January decide toeslag (benefit) eligibility for the whole next year. See our [rent-allowance guide](/en/dutch-tax-system/allowances/rent-allowance) for the exact asset limit. |
| Pension-gap or annuity top-up | 31 December | A lijfrente (annuity) deposit made within the calendar year is deductible in that same tax year. See our [pension gap](/en/pension/pension-gap) and [annuity](/en/pension/annuity) guide for your own room. |
Should you prepay mortgage interest before 31 December?
Only if you expect a lower interest rate or a smaller mortgage next year. Prepaying moves part of next year's deductible interest into this tax year. It helps most when this year's rate or deduction is more favourable than next year's will be. A mortgage advisor can run the actual numbers for your situation. Our mortgage-advice guide covers how that check works.
When does fiscal partnership need to be in place?
Before the calendar year ends, if you want that full year to count. The Belastingdienst looks at whether you met a qualifying condition during that specific year.³ Most often that's a notarial cohabitation agreement, a shared child, or joint home ownership. Daniel and his partner met the condition in November, so this tax year already counts for them. Sign it in January instead, and only next year counts. Our tax-partner allocation guide covers what fiscal partnership changes for your return.
How do you check a pension-gap or annuity top-up before year-end?
You compare your annual room, called jaarruimte, against what you've already paid in. Daniel's Dutch pension started two years ago, so his unused room comes from those two Dutch years. A deposit into a lijfrente account before 31 December is deductible in this tax year. A deposit made in January is not. Our pension gap and annuity guide covers how to work out your own jaarruimte.
How this plays out: Daniel's checklist.
Daniel's documents took an afternoon. His BSN and DigiD were already active. His employer's jaaropgave arrived by email in January, and his mortgage lender's portal had the jaaropgaaf ready by mid-January. His three deadline actions took longer to think through. Fiscal partnership needed nothing extra: he and his partner already met the condition in November, so this tax year counts for both of them. The pension-gap check needed a call with an advisor. The advisor worked out his unused jaarruimte from his two Dutch pension years. A modest lijfrente deposit before 31 December, he learned, would lower this year's taxable income. Mortgage-interest prepayment, he decided against, since his current rate is already lower than what he'd expect next year.
“Most people think about their tax return in April, when it's already too late to act on half of this list. December is when the pension-gap deposit, meeting the partnership condition and the mortgage decision actually happen. January is just for paperwork.”
What does this mean for you?
Start with the documents you can gather in one sitting. BSN, DigiD and your jaaropgave apply to almost everyone. Then check the deadline-action table against your own situation. If you own a home, check mortgage-interest prepayment. If you live with a partner but aren't married, check fiscal partnership. If you have a pension from more than one employer or country, check your pension gap. Each one has its own date, so check that date before you act. You usually need to file before 1 May, unless you request an extension. If you arrived or left the Netherlands this year, ask about the M-form. If a 30 percent ruling applies, check your Box 3 position. A foreign pension pot may need its own document too. A short conversation now is worth more than a longer one in April.
